'Out beyond ideas of wrong-doing and right doing, there is a field. I'll meet you there'
(Rumi)

Working with others in creating a space where difficulties (and joys) can be explored is a skilful task. Essentially, it is also a wonderful human thing to do. Most of us, at times of crisis simply ask to be truly heard, understood and helped to find meaning. But what makes a 'good' counsellor or listener?

Counsellor training for the workplace has changed enormously in the past year. In line with many other vocational qualifications it is now geared to a more vocationally related qualification with specific learning outcomes. As a registered centre, Insightful Company is also at the heart of those changes, striving to bring them meaningfully into the workplace.

The Level 2 Certificate in Initial Counselling Skills is the first programme in a progression of new awards offered by CPCAB (the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body), recognised by the QCA and LSC it is a recognised, certificated Level 2 course which is both internally and externally assessed. Details of CPCAB can be found on their website www.cpcab.co.uk.

Who is it for?

The basis of the programme is to enable you to develop your helping skills in the workplace. It is ideal for personnel staff, health and care workers, managers, voluntary workers and those at the 'coal face' of working with others. The course also provides an opportunity for both ongoing personal and professional development. It enables staff to build up their Continuous Professional Development Portfolio and is ideal for those companies or organisations committed to Investing in People.

What does it involve?

Essentially a strong commitment from participants to actively engage with others. There are carefully assessed tasks throughout the programme which also includes an external assessment task. In addition to the 30 guided learning hours or five days, participants will need to set aside time outside the course to complete learning reviews (approximately one hour per week). The course enables participants to both understand and demonstrate their competency (at this initial level of training) in seven key requirements:

  •  Using initial counselling skills safely
  •  Establishing a helping interaction
  •  Communicating an understanding of the other person's concerns
  •  Focusing on the others concerns
  •  Using initial counselling skills with self awareness
  •  Using initial counselling skills within the helping interaction
  •  Using study skills within the learning process

Insightful Company's unique teaching approach allows you to meet these requirements without losing the heart of the work.

Cost?

The course fee of £395 includes your registration fee with CPCAB. A buffet lunch is also provided on each of the 5 days and all necessary teaching materials are provided.

Where to next?

The course provides a strong basis for moving on to more in depth counsellor training. This route requires a minimum of 3 years further training with an accredited training provider. For most people this is not the desired outcome - simply becoming a more skilful worker is the professional aim.

The tutor team

Tutors on the course are skilled, experienced practitioners. The core staff for the Initial Counselling Skills Award are Jan Mojsa and Jan O'Mahony.
