Working with stress
'I am not a mechanism, an assembly of various sections.
And it is not because the mechanism is working wrongly that I am ill.
I am ill because of wounds to the soul, to the deep emotional self….'
(DH Lawrence)

Stress in the workplace is an increasingly important issue. It is costly to both individuals and organisations. Stress is the point of imbalance when the tension being sustained feels too great. The manifestations of this tension are well documented in terms of signs and symptoms.

Seen from an holistic perspective, stress is not simply the impact of an external stressor on an individual. This may be partly true, but of greater meaning in working with stress, is discovering our individual relationship to it. We know that what is stressful for one person may be exhilerating for another.

Our approach at Insightful Company is not simply a quick fix model, stress is far too complex. Rather, we seek to understand the expression of stress and the changes it may require of us in the context of our lives.

We offer two workshops:

Workshop one: Understanding and managing stress

A one-day event, this workshop is especially helpful for those individuals seeking a reflective space to understand the impact of stress in their lives and to gain an overview of stress. Going beyond managing stress through techniques, our approach also seeks to understand how stress manifests in our lives.

There are four distinct phases in this workshop:

Pre-course material invites participants to understand stress and to begin to explore their own individual patterns.

Participants are invited to reflect on their current situation(s) to name, or identify, the symptoms of their stress. Insightful Company sees symptoms as an important tool for self understanding.

Having identified the symptoms, it is now possible to begin to uncover the underlying patterns that contribute to the imbalance we experience as stress.

The final process is about identifying the potentially creative and healthy ways forward.

Participants will have an opportunity to focus on their own concerns and explore ways of understanding and working with patterns of difficulty, within a skilfully managed small group.

Workshop two: Supporting others in understanding and managing stress

A two-day event, this workshop is aimed at those with a responsibility for supporting others in the workplace. In addition to the ground covered in Workshop one, we also address ways of offering support and noticing stress patterns in others as well as ourselves.

We also explore risk assessment and identify the part the 'stressed organisation' plays in adding to negative well-being. Participants will have an opportunity to assess and analyse their workplace provision for working with stress.
